Few people stay in the same job for more than 3-5 years nowadays, whether by your choice or by your company’s decisions to downsize or layoff staff. Loyalty to employees/employers is dwindling and in this unsecure business world, you must plan a strategy for your career path, not just your next job or promotion. Branding “U” goes beyond your current job, it is an ongoing process that builds and demonstrates your transferrable skills and professional attributes throughout your career. It opens up the door to future promotions, allows for organizations to seek you out for open opportunities, or possibly create your future as a business owner.
Branding is building “U Company”; which is comprised of your transferrable skills: leadership/management, technical aptitude, unique competencies and expertise as well as your professional ethics and attributes that set you apart: commitment, integrity, reputation, training/development, productivity and pride in your work. It’s your recognizable reputation, who you are and what you bring to the table that is uniquely “U”. When professionals in your field or your network of connections hear your name, “U” should bring an instantaneous positive recollection to their mind.
Building your brand requires you to exhibit and prove daily, these talents to your current employer and in all business dealings with clients, vendors, other companies, competitors and your network connections, presenting your unique knowledge, expertise in your field and first-rate integrity. You never know who you are having an effect on and how they might play a role in your future career. It’s a strategic plan to promote and market “U” in your everyday activities. It’s essential to develop your social media profiles and networking skills, as well as build relationships and become certified/educated in essential areas within your field to establish your expertise properly. Along with your resume, you are sure to have a winning brand that will have opportunity knocking at your door!
